These can create real issues for people doing work, homework or health care online. (On average American families use an average of 100 GB data per month.)<\/li>\n<li>Latency is 20 times higher with satellite than terrestrial broadband and means the following applications won\u2019t work well or not at all\n<ul>\n<li>VPN (aka teleworkers logging into the network\/intranet\u00a0at work)<\/li>\n<li>Teleconferencing (such as Skype or Webex)<\/li>\n<li>Gaming and simulation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Understanding Satellite Pricing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Satellite monthly fees are based on\u00a0speed AND\u00a0usage.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Speed provides the capacity to interact online. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fcc.gov\/reports-research\/guides\/broadband-speed-guide\">FCC has a guide<\/a> to help track speed requirements by activity. For example, streaming an HD video requires 4 Mbps connection (download). To figure out your speed requirement, you\u2019ll have to consider all users of broadband \u2013 every laptop, smartphone, ipad and the Internet of things for each member of your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fcc.gov\/research-reports\/guides\/household-broadband-guide\">household or office<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Usage tracks accumulation of data. For example, an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fcc.gov\/research-reports\/guides\/broadband-service-home-consumers-guide\">HD movie may be 3 to 5 GB<\/a>. \u00a0It\u2019s like a cup that gets filled. Depending on you provider you may pay more if you overfill your cup, your connection maybe slowed down if your cup gets filled or your provider may not have data caps (aka data allowances) so you can interact online (download or upload) without limitations. Many people have experience with usage on mobile contracts \u2013 but cellular providers aren\u2019t the only ones that track and charge by usage.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We looked a cost for a number of different national and state broadband providers. (See table and chart below.) Some technologies (such as fiber) don\u2019t track usage. Others focus on use as much as speed. For those considering satellite Internet, they need to know that it is priced similarly to cellular data service, by the GB of data use.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/mnruralbroadbandcoalition.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/satellite-2-e1491914915410.png\" width=\"683\" height=\"273\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-475\" src=\"https:\/\/mnruralbroadbandcoalition.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/satellite-cost-chart.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"633\" height=\"388\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mnruralbroadbandcoalition.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/satellite-cost-chart.png 633w, https:\/\/mnruralbroadbandcoalition.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/satellite-cost-chart-150x92.png 150w, https:\/\/mnruralbroadbandcoalition.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/satellite-cost-chart-300x184.png 300w, https:\/\/mnruralbroadbandcoalition.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/satellite-cost-chart-489x300.png 489w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 633px) 100vw, 633px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You can see that the satellite service is more expensive for both bandwidth and data usage. The price for data usage, at $5 or $6 per GB compares very unfavorably to the dimes and nickels charged by landline providers. For all providers except satellite, the lower bandwidth services have the highest price per Mb.<\/p>\n<p>The value in the wired environment is the ability to scale from 25 Mb to a Gb and to have the network capability to deliver hundreds of GB of data every month to every customer. \u00a0Most sources now put monthly household data use at 100 GB and that number is constantly growing.\u00a0\u00a0You will also see two providers have no data cap for their Gigabit service.<\/p>\n<p>For rural residents that use data for school, business, health care or other date-heavy activities, it is clear that satellite is an expensive or very limiting broadband option. \u00a0Satellite\u2019s best feature may be that it is an option for all rural residents.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How are the costs calculated?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cost\/Usage &#8212; Usage cost per GB \u00a0($60 for 10 GB = $6 per GB)<\/li>\n<li>Cost\/Bandwidth (Connection speed) \u2014 Bandwidth cost per MB ($60 for 25 Mb = $2.40 per Mb<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>With the help of some friends, we have created a <a href=\"https:\/\/mnruralbroadbandcoalition.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/cost-usage-cost-bandwidth.xlsx\">broadband cost analysis spreadsheet<\/a> that you can use to help calculate the unit cost of your broadband.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How does satellite work?
